After rehabilitating the Emergency department at the Teaching Hospital and the Health Center in Sabratha, the Ministry of Local Governance (MoLG) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) together with the Ministry of Health, handed over both facilities to the Municipality. This initiative is part of ‘Strengthening Local Capacities for Resilience and Recovery’, a European Union funded project implemented by UNDP and MoLG in coordination with Tripoli, Sabratha, Sebha, Murzuq, Benghazi and AlKufra municipalities.

The emergency department at Sabratha Teaching Hospital used to attend 16,000 persons per year, however, the escalation of the conflict in 2017 damaged the unit. With the renovation, 500,000 people from Zawia to Ras Jedir, will be able to rely on this facility again. The project also delivered four obstetrics beds and 25 sets of medical supplies, and rehabilitated the laboratory, pediatric and pharmacy departments at Sabratha Health Center, which is now ready to receive 400 patients per day.

During a ceremony that took place at Sabratha Teaching Hospital, Minister of Local Governance, Mr. Milad Al-Taher, stated: “What was done here will help the Municipality to provide health services to citizens in Sabratha and nearby cities. We recognize the effort that all the partners have made, and we will try our best to deliver more medical equipment.”

“This is an example of the good cooperation between the Health and the Local Governance Ministries,” said Minister of Health, Dr. Ahmaid Ben Omar, “we especially thank the Municipality for its commitment to provide better healthcare.”

On his part, the Mayor of Sabratha, Mr. Mouftah El Breshini, declared: “Many hospitals are closed in this area, so it is a big responsibility of Sabratha Teaching Hospital to treat patients with the best medical care. We highly appreciate the important role of the European Union and UNDP to support Sabratha municipality for the renovation of these two facilities”.

In Sabratha, the project has also rehabilitated the High Institute of Comprehensive Careers, and the public tennis and basketball courts. Works to repair two plants of the water station will start soon to solve the flooding problems that the city often experiences.
