The UN electoral support project to assist “Central Committee for Municipal Elections (CCMCE)” benefitted today from a contribution of €2 million from the Federal Republic of Germany.

The contribution agreement was signed by the Ambassador of Germany to Libya, Mr. Oliver Owcza, and UNDP Country Director, Mr. Sultan Hajiyev.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Owcza stated: “I'm honored to announce Germany's contribution to Libya's municipal elections and supporting the efforts of the CCMCE towards democratic participation and inclusive election operations. Germany is trusted in the close cooperation with UNDP and CCMCE to support Libya´s self-governance on the municipal level.”

“The UN is grateful for Germany’s contribution, which will help to support credible electoral processes in Libyan municipalities,” said Mr. Hajiyev. “Thanks to this project, citizens will be able to freely select their representatives in local councils and to express their voices through their votes.”

Mr. Salem ben Tahieh, Chairman of the CCMCE declared in a public statement:

“The Central Committee for Municipal Council Elections welcomes the Ambassador of Germany and congratulates him for his nomination as Ambassador to Libya. We also extend our thanks and gratitude to the German government for its generous support of the municipal council elections as a means of building legitimate institutions charged with the local administration and development and providing services to the citizens. We thank our partner UNDP for its efforts to make this event possible.”

The project supporting the CCMCE, managed by UNDP in collaboration with UNSMIL and the Ministry of Planning, aims at assisting CCMCE to conducting municipal council elections all over Libya between 2018 and 2020. The initiative has already helped the CCMCE to organize the first municipal council elections in Zawiya, Derj and Bani Walid.
