UNDP supports the participation of Libya in global mine action meeting
April 11, 2014:
UNDP supports the participation of Libya in the international meeting on mine action and convention on cluster munitions from 31 March to April 9/ 2014. This 17th International Meeting was jointly organized by the United Nations Inter-Agency Coordination Group on Mine Action and the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD). The annual meeting presents an opportunity for members of the mine action community to meet and assess the progress and challenges within the sector. The Convention on Cluster Munitions intercessional meeting took place from 7 to 9 April 2014 in Geneva under the Presidency of H.E. Wylbur Simuusa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Zambia and President of the 4th Meeting of State Parties. UNDP Libya has sponsored the Libyan official delegation from Ministry of Defense (Department of Military Affairs) to participle in the meeting as observer.
Representing UNDP Libya, Mr Stephen Bryant, Technical Advisor, said that before 1990s, the word strategy was little used outside of military circles. Now, it seems unthinkable even conduct mine action activities without one. “A strategy looks ahead of the short-term and the trivial to the long-term and the essential in order to address the causes and not the symptoms” underlined Mr. Stephen.
